The Seven Last Words

Lenten Devotion – The Rev. Angus Wu

Fifth Word: “I thirst.”

It wasn't until the fifth word that Jesus turned to the pain and needs of His body: “I thirst.

Jesus felt “thirst” because He was on the cross: sweat and blood streamed down His body, dehydrated, exhausted and extremely weak... He really felt “thirst.”

Jesus became flesh, His body was an ordinary, complete flesh. He had all the senses and needs of our body: joy, weep, anger, weariness, hunger, thirst... Because of this flesh, Jesus was “in every respect been tempted as we are”, and therefore He could “sympathize with our weaknesses” (Hebrews 4:14).

Jesus said, “I thirst.” Was it really just an expression of the pain and need of his body? Why did He only said “I thirst” when He was suffering, bleeding and near collapse?

The Bible reminds us, “Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), ‘I thirst.’” (John 19:28). We know that this is from Psalm 69:21, “They put gall in my food and

gave me vinegar for my thirst.” (NIV)

Brothers and sisters, did it ever cross your mind that every word Jesus said, every action He did, or every feeling and thought in his heart was to fulfill God’s will and to realize God’s Words?

Jesus taught us to pray, “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” He put this into practice with the last words of His life: “said (to fulfill the Scripture), ‘I thirst.’

Prayer: O Lord, may Your will be done on us, and may our lives fulfill the will of God the Father. Amen.
